Companies Need Strategic Leadership

A recent local survey disclosed that – “Over sixty percent of senior managers polled characterized today’s corporate leaders as good or excellent in their roles.  But almost 40% say executives today are doing only a fair job!

Where does that put us as “Leaders versus Managers”?

Peter Drucker described it as follows:
"Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower stated:
“You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that’s assault, not leadership.”

John D. Rockefeller commented:
“Good leadership consists in showing average people how to do the work of superior people.”

Finally, Harry S. Truman told us:
“Men make history, and not the other way around.  In periods where there is no leadership society stands still.  Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”

The dictionary describes a leader as one who “Guides, Inspires and as One Who Goes First, Having Authority to Direct”, while a manager is defined as one who is “In Charge Of Others, Directs, Controls, Handles.”

There appears to be a subtle difference, but how wide the gap is between the two.  The manager waits for direction, while the leaders establishes the direction.  The manager is critical to the success of fulfilling the requirements to be successful, but without the leaders direction the chosen path may well be the wrong one.  Leaders can be managers, but not all managers can be leaders, only a select few have the strategic logic, good judgment, enthusiasm and passion for their work and the ability to create a sound plan regardless of the competing priorities that surround them.  Most of all they must be outstanding communicators and possess the innate ability to recognize and cultivate like qualities in those top-level positions that they create to support their mission.
